David Benavidez already beat himself by tipping the scale nearly three pounds overweight Friday and being forced to vacate the WBC super middleweight title.
No longer the champion, the 23-year-old Benavidez can at least salvage the weekend by trying to defeat a battle-tested veteran in Alexis Angulo at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on Saturday night.
Entering the bout, Benavidez knows he messed up badly, but he is still looking forward to winning this fight, nevertheless.
"I'm very disappointed," Benavidez told Showtime after missing weight on Friday. "Obviously, this is my first time missing weight. Like I said, very disappointed losing the title on the scale, but I've still got a job to do (Saturday). I lose the title, but I'm still going to win (Saturday)."
Benavidez became the WBC titleholder with a ninth-round TKO of Anthony Dirrell last September. He'll be facing Angulo, who has pieced together a three-fight winning streak, including a split decision over Anthony Sims Jr. in January before the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Will Benavidez be able to channel his frustration into demolishing Angulo, or will the game challenger seize this moment to pull off an upset?
